Get Organized for Summer Abundance

Do you find yourself dreaming about summer and the abundance of flowers, fruits and vegetables? Wouldn't you enjoy looking through photos of pretty flowers and scrumptious fruits and vegetables and forget about dreary winter weather for a short while? Well, February is the perfect time to organize next summer's garden. Order supplies while they are plentiful and before spring shipping begins.

The main advantage to ordering your seeds, tubers, roots and plants, is that you can be sure to find the best varieties for your garden. If you wait to see what is offered in local garden centers, chances are you won't find your first choice. Either the best selections will be picked over during the spring rush, or the available choices won't compare to what you can find online.

Plants, bulbs, roots and tubers will be shipped at the right time for planting. And if you can't plant right away, you will be given instructions on how to safely care for your material until you are able to plant. There is no need to worry about getting to the local garden center at the right time to purchase time-sensitive materials.

There are many online sources, but below are some of my favorites.

  • Johnnys Selected Seeds in Maine is my go to source for veggie and flower seeds and supplies. http://www.johnnyseeds.com

  • Pine Tree Garden Seeds, a smaller outfit in Maine, is especially nice for smaller quantities of seeds at lower cost. https://www.superseeds.com

  • High Mowing Seeds in Vermont sells certified organic, non-GMO seed. https://www.highmowingseeds.com

  • Stark brothers - not based in New England, but they've been in the business for 200 years: https://www.starkbros.com is a good source for fruit trees and berry bushes.
